Blessing of the Animals
The threatening rain clouds did not stop the gentle souls and their owners from attending the Annual Blessing of the Animals celebration in Labrador City on October 1, 2006. TJ and Sutton were perfect gentlemen as they welcomed the many visitors into their yard. As friends greeted each other, their pets spent time playfully romping around the grounds introducing themselves. They stopped only long enough for a sniff and a scratch and then they were off to meet the next outstretched leashed held hand.
Just as the group gathered around Father Tony O’Dell, the sun broke through, casting delightful rays of sunlight on the shiny coats of our four legged companions. Father Tony spent a few moments reminding us how fortunate we are to share our lives and our earth with all of God's creatures.
Although the animal's excitement was hard to contain at times, the group (both humans and animals!) joined choir member George Power in singing Prayer of St. Francis as Father Tony sprinkled the animals with Holy Water.
A special event or celebration would not be complete without the group picture. It took a bit of tugging and lots of treats but finally the group stood by the statue of St. Francis and Father Jarek got a wonderful picture. (Written by Lisa Blackmore)
